As far as flowering plants go, the Lantana camara is deceptively ornamental. Lantana is actually a weed — a drought-resistant, non-native species that was brough to India by the British, and that has since taken over with a density and pace that threatens India's own native biodiversity.

Being very expensive to remove, the menace is a challenging one. Solutions have to be innovative, and take into account not only environment but also the livelihoods of people in affected areas — mainly Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
